Obituary for Maria Regina French

Maria Regina French, beloved mother and grandmother passed into the loving arms of our Savior Wednesday, April 11, 2018, at 12:10 p.m. in her home surrounded by love. She was born August 15, 1940, in Mexico City, Mexico to Plutarco and Feliciana (Aspeipa) Villegas, both whom have preceded her in death.

She came to the United States at the age of 16 with the help of her beloved sister Julia and brother-in-law Eusebio where she lived with them in Fort Madison, Iowa. After meeting and marrying her husband Richie Lasswell in 1962, they later moved to Aurora in 1964. He preceded her in death in 1980.

In moving to Aurora, she became the proprietor of La Casita, La Rosa and later Ricardo’s Mexican Foods, which she co-owned and ran with her son Richie. Cooking was one of her passions and she was amazing at it. She not only operated her restaurant but used it as a place of ministry. A way to provide not just food, but love, friendship, a place to minister God’s grace and a place to feed the hungry, which she did so many times.

In 1984 she married her husband Donald French who preceded her in death in 1986.

Her children and grandchildren were her whole world. She was an amazing mother. Her love for all her kids was so deep and unconditional and unwavering. She was the mold of what a mother and grandmother should be. A visit or phone call from any of her kids or grandkids would brighten her day and visits with her were filled with hugs, kisses and God bless you. Her hugs were strong and loving and her kisses always left an imprint on your heart.

Our Lord was another passion so close to her heart. She was a devout Christian and a dedicated prayer warrior. She attended Faith Full Gospel Church for many years and loved her church family so much. She prayed daily for everyone and even for some she didn’t know. She adopted numerous people into her family who thought of her as mom or grandma. She always thought of others and worried so much about everyone she always wanted to make sure everyone was taken care of. She prayed for them, listened to them, she had so much love. Her faith in God was steadfast and her love for Jesus was great.

She was a precious and beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend and she will be greatly missed and remembered forever. Heaven has gained a beautiful angel.

She is survived by her seven children and their families; Eddie (Misty) Mendez of Aurora, Sylvia Nactrab of Republic, Patricia Groesbeck of the home, Richie Lasswell of the home, Melissa Lasswell of the home, Nicole (David) Edwards of Aurora and Mark Guzman of Illinois; 18 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 2 great- grandchildren due in September.

Her beloved husbands, Richie Lasswell and Donald French, parents, Plutarco and Feliciana Villegas, two brothers, Timo and Raul of Mexico, son-in-law, Jack Nactrab, granddaughter Mackenzie Erin Mendez and grandson, Tim Breeden preceded her in death.

A funeral service under the direction of the Crafton-Cantrell Funeral Home in Aurora will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 16, 2018, at the Faith Full Gospel Church in Aurora. Visitation will be held from 1:00-2:00 p.m. on Monday at the Church. Burial will follow at the Clay Hill Cemetery south of Aurora.
