Obituary for James "Jim" Johnson

James “Jim” Edward Johnson, age 75, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, formerly of Aurora, Missouri, passed away at 1:20 p.m. on Saturday, June 15, 2019, at Clarehouse Hospice in Tulsa. He was born September 12, 1943, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the son of David Leroy “Roy” and Hilda Marie “Pat” (Jensen) Johnson.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 20, 2019, at the Crafton-Cantrell Funeral Home, in Aurora. Burial will follow at the Maple Park Cemetery in Aurora. Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 19, 2019, in the funeral home chapel.

In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer memorial donations to be made to any of the following: “University of Oklahoma Foundation” for the OU Softball Stadium Renovation project (Sooner Club, 180 W Brooks, Norman, OK 73019), or “Seasons Hospice” in Tulsa, Oklahoma or “Clarehouse Hospice Home” in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Please note ‘Jim Johnson Memoriam’ in any correspondence.

Jim was a 1961 graduate of Aurora High School and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from SMSU (now MSU), as well as a Master’s Degree in Guidance & Counseling. He was a retired high school English teacher and coach, serving the majority of his career for Aurora Public Schools. He coached multiple sports including football and track and basketball for both boys and girls. On June 9, 1962, he married Gerry Johnson in Miami, Oklahoma.

Jim was loving, witty, and fun. He loved spending time with his family. He was an avid sports fan, who excelled in football, baseball, softball, and basketball. Had he not been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in his early 20’s, it is believed that he could have likely pursued a professional baseball career. Jim was a member of the 1964 Missouri State University inaugural baseball team. In later years, his joy came from supporting OU softball and watching his granddaughter, Erin, play there, where she was an All-American and 2016 Big 12 POY. He also loved supporting his guardian granddaughter, Andrea McKee, who played at Oklahoma State. Jim was a staunch supporter of women’s athletics. He was exceptionally well read and taught literature, word study, and composition. He was an excellent Scrabble player.

Jim is survived by his two daughters, Gina (Johnson) Miller and her husband, Randy, of Tulsa and Stephanie Johnson of Aurora; two granddaughters, Erin Miller of Tulsa and Andrea McKee of Edmond, Oklahoma, as well as his brother, Bob Johnson, of Dallas, Texas. His wife, Gerry; his parents, Roy and Pat Johnson; his sister, Judy (Johnson) Brown and his brother, David Johnson, preceded him in death.
